P0011 — A Camshaft Timing Over-Advanced / System Performance Bank 1

Advanced code-specific diagnostic direction. Confirm the fault with scan data, circuit testing and physical inspection before replacing components.

Symptoms / what you may see

Rattle on start-up, rough idle, lack of power, hard start, cam correlation code or oil sludge history.

Safety / setup

Work on level ground, secure the vehicle, keep hands clear of belts/fans and disconnect battery power only when the procedure allows it. Record active, pending, history codes and freeze-frame before clearing anything.

Possible causes

  • Low/dirty oil, incorrect viscosity or restricted oil control valve screen.
  • Sticking VVT oil control solenoid or cam phaser.
  • Stretched timing chain/belt, jumped timing or worn guides.
  • Oil pressure issue affecting cam actuator movement.
  • Cam sensor/crank sensor signal issue falsely affecting position calculation.

Known-fault bulletin direction

Holden Alloytec, Toyota VVT-i, BMW VANOS and Nissan/Mazda VVT faults commonly need oil-control and correlation checks before sensors. Known chain issues still require cam/crank data or mechanical timing confirmation.

Confirm VIN, engine code, build date and OEM service information before quoting a known pattern failure.

Advanced test path

  1. Check oil level, grade, service history and sludge first.
  2. Command VVT solenoid and compare desired vs actual cam angle.
  3. Scope cam/crank correlation if correlation data is suspect.
  4. Check OCV resistance, feed, ground and actuator movement.
  5. Check mechanical timing and oil pressure if actual cam movement is slow or offset.

Repair order

  1. Correct oil/service issue and clean screens where service procedure allows.
  2. Replace proven failed OCV/phaser.
  3. Repair timing chain/belt fault when correlation confirms it.
  4. Perform relearn/adaptation where OEM procedure requires it.
