P0171 — System Too Lean Bank 1
Advanced code-specific diagnostic direction. Confirm the fault with scan data, circuit testing and physical inspection before replacing components.
Safety / setup
Work on level ground, secure the vehicle, keep hands clear of belts/fans and disconnect battery power only when the procedure allows it. Record active, pending, history codes and freeze-frame before clearing anything.
Possible causes
- Vacuum leak, split PCV hose, brake booster leak or intake gasket leak.
- MAF under-reporting due to contamination, wrong airbox fitment or unmetered air after MAF.
- Low fuel pressure/volume, restricted filter, weak pump or biased fuel pressure sensor.
- Exhaust leak before A/F or oxygen sensor causing false lean reading.
- Purge valve leaking fuel vapour at idle and shifting trims.
Known-fault bulletin direction
Toyota, Holden, Ford and Nissan lean codes often come from intake leaks, PCV leaks, dirty MAFs or fuel-delivery issues. Check known intake duct and PCV hose failures before oxygen sensor replacement.
Confirm VIN, engine code, build date and OEM service information before quoting a known pattern failure.
Advanced test path
- Record STFT/LTFT at idle, 2500 rpm no-load and during road-load. Idle-only positive trim points strongly toward unmetered air.
- Smoke-test intake, PCV, booster and EVAP purge path. Pinch purge line briefly if safe and observe trim change.
- Check MAF g/s against engine size and load; inspect ducting after the MAF.
- Verify fuel pressure and volume under load, not just key-on static pressure.
- Check upstream sensor response only after air/fuel delivery is proven.
Repair order
- Repair intake/PCV/vacuum leak or purge leak.
- Clean or replace proven biased MAF only after circuit and airflow checks.
- Repair fuel delivery if pressure/volume drops under load.
- Clear trims only after repair and road-test fuel trim correction.
