P0299 — Turbo/Supercharger Underboost

Advanced code-specific diagnostic direction. Confirm the fault with scan data, circuit testing and physical inspection before replacing components.

Symptoms / what you may see

Low power, limp mode, turbo whistle, smoke, DPF warning, poor towing performance or boost not reaching command.

Safety / setup

Work on level ground, secure the vehicle, keep hands clear of belts/fans and disconnect battery power only when the procedure allows it. Record active, pending, history codes and freeze-frame before clearing anything.

Possible causes

  • Split intercooler hose, loose clamp, leaking charge cooler or intake restriction.
  • Turbo actuator, VNT mechanism, wastegate or boost-control solenoid fault.
  • MAP/MAF sensor contamination or plausibility issue.
  • Exhaust restriction, blocked DPF or EGR fault.
  • Vacuum supply fault on vacuum-operated systems.

Known-fault bulletin direction

Ford Ranger/Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-MAX and VW/European diesels often need charge-air pressure testing and actuator checks before turbo replacement.

Confirm VIN, engine code, build date and OEM service information before quoting a known pattern failure.

Advanced test path

  1. Graph commanded vs actual boost under load.
  2. Pressure-test charge-air system and inspect hoses/intercooler.
  3. Command actuator/VNT/wastegate and verify movement.
  4. Check MAP/MAF plausibility and clean-test sensors if contaminated.
  5. Check DPF differential pressure/exhaust restriction before turbo replacement.

Repair order

  1. Repair boost leak or intake restriction.
  2. Repair actuator/control/vacuum fault.
  3. Clean/replace proven biased MAP/MAF.
  4. Repair exhaust/DPF/EGR cause if restriction is proven.
